research request ReplyPosted by: Jim Croyle
October 26, 2007
I am willing to pay the fee for a genealogy search to staff for a search for information regarding the name Croyle, that includes dates. I am stuck on my ggrandfather George W. Croyle who died in 1957, and was born in about 1886 in Armstrong co. He married Bessie A. Wyant who died in 1969.If someone can contact me with the details I would appreciate it. ph. no. 740-360-0942 Thanks

I would suggest you contact the Mildred Lankerd Thomas Genealogical Library and send in your request for the Croyle Family. The staff does research work for $10.00 per hour and you can limit them to one hour. Photo copies are 25 cents for the first 10, then go to 10 cents for the 11th. They do have obituaries which cover the time frame you mention. Lankerd Thomas Library; P.O. Box 375; Kittanning, PA. 16201.

I need to hire a researcher to do a little research for me as I live in NC. It will only require a vsit to the courthouse and can give specific info. Also need to know how far back there are plat maps for Armstrong, Madison Twp and if someone can help me out there. thank-you much Pegi at pegisist@earthlink.net

The Lankerd Thomas Genealogical Library staff does not do research outside of the library. As of now, there are no researchers that I know of who are doing Courthouse research. The courthouse staff will do a minimum amount for a fee. You might call the Register and Recorder's office to see what the procedure might be. Call: 724-548-3280.

I am engaging in research for a book about Simon Girty, who was a captive in Kittanning during the Armstrong raid. If you have any information about Girty, I would much appreciate your sharing it with me.
RE: writerReply Posted by: Web monitor
October 19, 2007
As you probably know, Simon Girty was born in 1741 near Harrisburg, PA. and died in Canada. The dates that Girty was in the PA area are outside the time frame of Armstrong Co. Some of that information is probably found in Westmoreland Co. There is a town of Girty in South Bend Township, Armstrong Co. I had done an amount of rearch trying to find if that town was named after the "Girty" family. I was never able to prove it one way or the other. The Lankerd Thomas Genealogical Library in Kittanning has a book on the shelves on the Girty's.

I wrote to the Armstrong County Genealogy Club on Aug. 29 concerning the above family which lived in Wayne in 1847. Their daughter Lille Ann married Jonathan Donahue, or Donahey, that year. Will I get a response to my query?

Research questions sent to ACGC (Armstrong Co. Genealogy Club) will be forwarded on to Lankerd Thomas Genealogy Library. The Library will answer your research (fee is $10.00 per hour). The library has a back log of requests of about four weeks.

As a descendant of the Bargerstock Family of Armstrong County, we are interested in any pictures/ information related to our early ancestors. The property they lived on was the McCrea Furnace site on the Mahoning Creek in Wayne Township.

I am trying to find out any information on Rimer Hill. Is that the place where the old Rimerton Coal Company was located and if it was where exactley was it? My great Grandfather used to work there. Thanks.
RE: Rimer HillReply Posted by: web monitor
October 19, 2007
In Armstrong Co., we have Rimerton, and Rimer in Madison Twp., and also Rimer Hill Cemetery. In Toby Twp., in Clarion Co. there is Rimersburg. I was not able to verify anything on Rimer Hill Coal Co. or mining. You might try a mining site on Roots web; which is , he has much information there. You might "google" Indiana University of PA. In their "special collections" there is material on local coal mines.

For almost 30 years my family owned a hunting camp on Rimer Hill. The camp was in the midst of the foundations of an old mining camp. In fact our well/spring hou se was part of the old mining company. It had the date of 1919 on it. There are only foundations of the old buildings left and a giant pile of coal slag poured out onto the river hill. Rimer Hill is just west of the town of Tidal. The next closest town is Widnoon. I currently live in Maryland but if I had a PA map, I could direct you to the exact location. Contact me, if interested, at johnperry@atlanticbb.net

I was wondering if you have any information about Samuel W. Kenney or his wife Mirriam V. Fox who were married in Armstrong County on 3 Sep 1847. Mirriam was born in Armstrong County on 17 Apr 1828. Her parents were John Fox and Anna McCune.

McBride Family ReplyPosted by: Betty Smith

I am seeking information on my great, great grandfather, John McBride(1781-1866) married to Nancy (1789-1874) maiden name unknown. John was in the War of 1812. They had at least two children, John, Jr (1814-1874)and Michael, my great grandfather, who was born in Sugar Creek Twp, Armstrong County in 1806. The parents were Irish immigrants. This family moved to Sandusky County, OH in about 1837. I have visited the Kittaning court house, and St. Patrick's church and cemetery and am almost certain that Michael was baptized there around 1806 but have not been able to document. Have the St. Patrick records been microfilmed and how might I obtain this information? My e-mail address is: msmitty7850@sbcglobal.net

The St. Patrick's Catholic Church records have been put into book form several years ago for their anniversary. I'm not aware of them being on micro-film. Information from the published book can be found at the Lankerd Thomas Gen. Library in Kittanning.

I am researching the old blast furnaces in Armstrong County. I am look for any information about the furnaces. I am interseted in old maps or land plans, stories, photographs or anything to give me insight on their operation. I would be happy to copy any materials. I do not want the originals. You can contact me at glbs34@gmail.com. Thanks

This information you are seeking would probably be found in the book entitled,"A Guide to the Old Stone Blast Furnaces in Western Pennsylvania" by Myron B. Sharp and William H. Thomas. Published by the Historical Society of Western PA, Pittsburgh, 1966. Lankerd Thomas Library has a copy of this book.

StewardsonFurnace ReplyPosted by: Jack Cousins

I am seeking information about the iron furnace in Pine Twp. It was known as Stewardson Furnace. Is it still standing? My great grandfather, John A. Cousins, was a worker there. If possible, can you supply me with his middle name? He is buried at the cemetery near Stewardson.
RE: StewardsonFurnaceReply Posted by: Anonymous
November 18, 2006
Stewardson Furnace was built in 1851 by Stewardson and Laughlin. Its capacity was about 80 tons per week until it went out of blast sometime after 1880. Further up the hill from what used to be the furnace site were the remains of coke ovens used to produce the coke for the furnace. At one time, there were about 40 homes at this location, with 7 made of brick. The Stewardson Furnace Cemetery is located high above Mahoning Creek on the edge of a hill overlooking the bends in the creek. I note that John A Cousins does have a tombstone there, and also a Civil War Marker, from the 78th Reg't. I have checked a number of sources but can't find the middle name of John. The furnace has been gone for many, many years.

Would like to know if the history is available online and/or how to find the original deeding of the property.
RE: Hebron Lutheran Church LeechburgReply Posted by: Anonymous
June 19, 2006
I do not know of any History of the Hebron Church in Leechburg on line. To find the original deed to the property you will need to check the Register and Recorder's Office in the Armstrong County Courthouse and trace the deed back to the original land owner. If you are interested in the records of the church, the Lankerd Thomas Genealogy Library in Kittanning probably has a copy of them. Sometimes there is a "history" of the church in the records books. You can contact them at: 724-548-5707. I hope this answers your question.

The plans for the September 2006 French and Indian War Reenactment and programs in Kittanning are not complete as of now. Kittanning will host a march from Shirleysburg around the first week of September. You might drop a note to the Armstrong Co. Tourist Bureau, 125 Market Street, Kittanning, PA. 16201. They are in charge of the planning. Thanks for the inquiry.
